Reader Question on Knee Pain

Shashi has left a new comment on the MyAchingKnees.com post "Lovaza – Prescription Omega 3 Supplement": “My wife is having pain on knees. When she goes for morning walk she told me that a knocking sound is coming from Joint. She told me that OMEGA DEC3 capsule is good medicine for joint pain that she has watched in TV program. At present I am staying in NEW BHUJ of GUJRAT. Kindly guide me the nearby medicine shop where i can get this capsule.”

MyAchingKnees.com response: Greetings Sashi who is in NW India. I think that Omega 3 Fatty Acids are a supplemental component to knee and joint pain and not the principal nutrient for your joints problems. Omega 3 Fatty Acids are a great nutrient to take as it helps combat oxidative stress, but I would also be looking to provide your knees and joints with Glucosamine.

I am not a fan of off the shelf Glucosamine or other nutritional supplements as there is no way to determine if they are pure, potent, bio-available or even dissolve adequately. If they were potent, pure and meet standards then they would be pharmaceutical grade products and therefore you could be assured of getting what is advertised. The products I used are not sold or available in India ; they are available in 14 countries, however I am sorry India is not one of them.

If your question was pertaining to Lovaza, a prescription Omega 3 Fatty Acids, then availability would be through your medical doctor if that prescription drug is available in India .

Good luck. Shashi.

Digestive Health affects Everything Else

Bottom line up front - without an effective and healthy digestive system, your body can't breakdown and absorb the nutrients that your body needs to combat degenerative diseases to include oxidative stress and the inflammation that affects your joints.

A strong digestive system is necessary to also detoxify your body and includes everything from the mastication (chewing) of food to prepare it for the esophagus, to the breakdown of foods in the stomach and the absorption of nutrients in the large intestine.

An unhealthy stomach can create many chronic health conditions such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, chronic joint pain, lupus, Crohns disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and many others.

If you are interested in learning more about Digestive Wellness, then contact me through the "contact me" icon and put "Digestive Wellness" in the comment block. I will send you a four page pdf version of an excellent article on Digestive Health.

The article on Digestive Health is one that you'll want to share with everyone you know.

Tylenol and Hyaluronic Acid for Aching Joints?

This morning I was listening to a radio talk show and one of the speakers was stating that he found good joint pain relief using Tylenol to manage the pain and inflammation, and Hyaluronic Acid (HA) to provide lubrication to the joint.

I just know someone will fall for it and if they are lucky, the results will just be a detour to that person eventually finding some relief from achy joints. If they are un-lucky they will further degrade their overall health and joints with the Tylenol as this pain reliever is hard on the liver and may mask the pain of the joint and lead to overuse and possible structural damage.

The Hyaluronic Acid may work. The Scientists I talk to tell me they don't believe it does. Other researchers tell me companies that produce these over the counter joint products are hesitate to fund independent laboratories to test their claims as they may very well be funding their own ruin.

Bottom line is that if it works for you, then stick with it. I am happy with my pharamceutical grade Glucosamine which includes manganese, turmeric, silicon and most importantly Vitamin C which is a great anti-oxidant and important for connective tissue health. I take 2,000 mg of Glucosamine, 300 mg of Vitamin C, 5 mg of Manganese, 500 mg of Turmeric extract and 3 mg of Silicon each day.

I further take an Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acide supplement which provides 4000 mg of pharmaceutical grade fish oil, including 2400 mg total of Omega 3 Fatty Acids(1160 mg of Eicosapentaenoic Acid - EPA and 940 mg of Docosahexaenoic Acid - DHA), plus 400 IU of Vitamin D each day.

Oh yeah,...the funny part of today's talk show was when the speaker said words to the effect "HA is like water as it lubricates the joints and we all know that the Spanish Explorer Ponce De Deon was looking for the Fountain of Youth - a water source.".....well, that's the point where I changed stations. Ponce De Leon? You gotta be kidding me!

New Fitness Site

Saw a new fitness site that promises a different look at being fit - which is one of the legs of the Chair of Health - being physical active.

The website site, called "Stress Free Fit", advertises the following: "Stress Free Fitness Overview - The stress free fitness philosophy or concept consist of three core elements; Motivation, Consistency and Visualization. Together these elements, when working together, create a baseline or foundation for all fitness programs. Just about everything in life needs or has a foundation and nothing lasts too long without a good one. Therefore in order for an exercise program to provide long term positive results you must be aware of the foundation and get it energized or sparked and get the elements rotating. In my opinion everyone has the fire or at least a pilot light burning, so SPARK IT UP!

StressFreeFit also has a Facebook page, where one can go and (I guess) "like it"? and receive updates when this site posts articles or links to articles.

Beware of False Advertising

I was recently sent an e-mail with a link to a site that advertised "common kitchen cures" to colds, the flu, sore throats, etc. This website is either on the other side of the law, or rapidly approaching it when they announce "cures" as opposed to "possible remedies for symptoms".  I believe in simple remedies for symptoms, but they are not cures...not should they make people think they are.  to What got me started on this subject was their announcement that Chocolate syrup cured sore throats as harmless as it sounds.

Same thing across the board, especially with joint supplements. Beware of the product advertised to "cure" this or that. With food products, being advertised to treat to help degenerative disease, you should be the caveat that "These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease."

The FDA is not in the market to evaluate food or nutrients for potential treatment or supplementive treatment of any diseases.

Research institutes can make claims based on studies that use words like "this nutrient has shown promising results in reducing joint pain or whatever the particular disease may be that the nutrient is claimed to help alleviate.

Having said all that I still stand by the concept that proper nutrition and a nutritional approach to medical problems should always be considered either as an initial, less invasive approach or as part of a combined approach.  Even then proper nutrition is a life time treatment plan as opposed to doing it for four weeks and eliminating your symptoms or disease.

Toxic Home Products

MyAchingKnees has written many times about the Chair of Health with the four legs a person has to maintain to have optimum health. Again, the most overlooked aspect of health is avoidance of toxins.

Common toxins in the home are getting more and more attention as evident by the following article from Forbes. But before you read this, I'm going to answer the question you already have. "What does this have to do with Joint Pain?"

There an unalienable fact that inflammation caused by oxidative stress and the resultant free radicals degrading the body at the cellular level can manifest itself in many different ways, hence increasing the list of degenerative diseases caused by oxidative stress and inflammation. See a pattern here? Like a cat chasing his tail. We have long preached that a comprehensive approach to your health is the foundation for addressing specific problems like chronic joint pain.

From Forbes.com
The Most Toxic Home Products

Flame-retardants are used in the foam found in products like cribs, high chairs, strollers and nursing pillows. The chemicals involved are PBDEs or other retardants with bromine or chlorine, which have been linked to sexual and neurological disorders.

Vinyl flooring and shower curtains
Phthalates are used to soften the plastic that goes into vinyl flooring and shower curtains. This chemical has been associated with causing harmful effects to growth and development in children, and impacting brain functions like learning, behavior and memory.

Nonstick pots and pans
There's some controversy over the effects of the coating on nonstick pans, commonly known as Teflon. The Teflon chemical, PTFE, is thought to be harmless. But non-stick pans heated past 500 degrees Fahrenheit, or that have started to flake, can emit toxic byproducts of PTFE that can cause flu-like symptoms in humans.

Consumer electronics
This category can be a toxic cocktail. Phthalates are found in the power cords of devices or controller cables of game consoles. Brominated flame retardants (BFRs), which have been linked to impaired brain development and cancer in humans, are added to circuit boards and plastic casings.

Hard plastic bottles and containers
Bisphenol A (BPA) is found in many plastic bottles and containers. Recent studies have shown that BPA could have effects on the brain, behavior and prostrate gland in infants and young children.

Insulation
BFRs are added to housing insulation materials to meet fire safety codes. These chemicals can accumulate in the body over a long period of time and have been linked to impaired brain development and cancer in humans.

Air fresheners and cleaners
Sprays or even some scented candles that "freshen" the air often use phthalates to spread the fragrance.

Cosmetics
Phthalates can also be found in perfumes, deodorants and hair sprays, as well as nail polish. Not to mention parabens and formaldehyde. In fact, roughly 200 chemicals found in cosmetics have also been found in the umbilical cord of babies.

One of the ways to protect yourself from toxins is to be informed. You still have to take action,...but you need to know what to take action on. We previously highlighted the publishing of a book, called The Healthy Home. It is now available.

The Healthy Home
Simple Truths to Protect Your Family from Hidden Household Dangers
by Myron Wentz, Ph.D. and Dave Wentz, with Donna K. Wallace

Book overview
In The Healthy Home, readers take a trip through the home of Dave Wentz, where the authors point out potential dangers of our modern living spaces. The book offers a common-sense approach to removing toxins from the environment where you live and raise your family. Throughout The Healthy Home, these hidden dangers are discussed in plain terms and elaborated on in a more scientific way by Dr. Wentz — allowing you to dive as deeply into the information as you want. The book also provides tips on minimizing the risks you may not have realized you were taking with your health.

Reader Comment on Prior Creatine Post

MyAchingKnees.com received an Anonymous new comment on your post "Link between Creatine and Chronic Joint Pain?",...“I just wanted you to know three times I have gone on Creatine Monohydrate and three times within 5 days my shoulders and elbows hurt so bad I cannot pick up a gallon of milk. I am done with the stuff... it has a side effect on me and I know it is what causes the pain in my shoulders and elbows. No change in weights or routine, just tried to add the creatine back in, third to fifth day impossible to live with the pain.”

Boy, how many times I have heard that? I forwarded this message to a friend of mine who has been weight training the past 30 years. He is also someone who I have exposed our pharmaceutical grade Glucosamine as well as the Omega 3 Fatty Acids supplement to which he has been taking for over a year now and loves it as he has greatly reduced his previous joint pain which he attributes to the Glucosamine and Omega 3’s.

His reply to me on the above reader comment: People don’t listen. You can tell them over and over not use Creatine and they still will. I know what the drive for muscle and the latest edge is all about as I have lived it for almost 36 years. You can probably take Creatine if your a kid or in your twenties, in small amounts, but it can cause a heart attack if you do too much cardio too hard. If you are 35 to 40 years old or older, it causes tendonitis and it occurs in multiple tendons at the same time. I tell the young guns in the gym about Creatine all the time. They don’t listen. They also insist on taking those steroid precursors and amino acids, etc., which I used for year until I found out that they were garbage products. The most important supplement is a daily nutritional supplement and the stuff I take for my joint pain.

Well there you have it. Actually, people just need to be individually responsible……responsible for researching on their own, and ultimately, the phrase “let the buyer beware” stills rings true.
